Travel Guide to Szekesfehervar - Veszprem - Balaton - Pecs
The oldest city in the country, where for centuries Hungarian kings were crowned and buried. The sights are compactly located in the well-preserved Old Town. In a couple of hours, you can quickly see the Cathedral of St. Stephen and the Chapel of St. Anne, the Bishop's Palace and the elegant building of the Vörösmarty Theater, funny monuments, romantic mansions in the Baroque and Rococo style, and the fabulous "castle of eternal love".
A charming town with a rich history - the first episcopate was founded in it and here, in St. Michael's Cathedral, the coronations of Hungarian queens took place. Walk around the Fortress Quarter, don't miss the Bishop's Palace and the Petofi Theater, surrounded by a beautiful park. Climb the Fire Tower at the top of Fortress Hill for a breathtaking panorama of the city and its environs from its observation deck.
3. Lake Balaton
Hungary more than compensates for its lack of access to the sea by the presence of Lake Balaton, which optimists called the "Hungarian Sea", and skeptics, due to its shallow depth, "the largest puddle of Central Europe." Deep or not, Balaton is very picturesque: emerald-turquoise water, a ridge of green hills, sailboats scurry from coast to coast, and snow-white swans live in quiet backwaters. There is something to look at for connoisseurs of antiquity - for example, the Festetics castle on the northwestern shore of the lake or the Benedictine abbey on the Tihany peninsula. If you have enough time, take a trip to the popular spa resort by the beautiful thermal lake Heviz.
For a small town in Pec, there are surprisingly many attractions - from early Christian burials, Catholic cathedrals, and Turkish mosques to modern art galleries, open-air photo exhibitions, and a scattering of museums. It is also worth completing the route here because of the excellent restaurants and pastry shops where you can refresh yourself before a late return to Budapest.
